Gufford, veteran volun-teer fireman with the Winter Park fire department, announced his retirement from the depart-ment this week after 32 years of continuous service. Mr. Gufford joined the depart-ment as a volunteer fireman back in 1921, and has aided in practi-cally every fire of major and minor importance in Winter Park since that time. In recognition of his service to the city, Ray Miller, city man-ager, extend the appreciation of the city in a letter to Mr. Gufford, and has given him the title of honorary fireman of the Winter Park Fire Department. In response, the children had another ride on the big red fire truck. “Fire Ball” will be trained by the firemen to ride the truck, and when properly coached, will be al-lowed to accompany them to fires. Herald February 7, 1952 Commision Approves Court Fees Fire Chief Sachse’s Resignation Accepted Effective March 31 Winter Park City Commission Monday evening approved a new city ordinance providing for pay-ment of court costs by violators of the laws of the City of Winter Park in the amount of $5, except when in the opinion of the city judge such assessment would cre-ate a hardship to the violator. Adoption and passage of the or-dinance will be confirmed at the next commission meeting. The resignation of Fire Chief Sachse was accepted by the commission effective as of March 31, 1952, although Mr. Sachse will relinquish his duties on February 29. W. P. Herald June 5, 1952 One for the Book Winter Park firemen all agree today the Atlantic Coast Line is at least cooperative. Accus-tomed to racing to fires, early this morning they had one brought ot their door. The 3:31 a.m. train pulled up in front of the fire department and requested the firemen to put out a fire in the baggage compartment. The ACL track runs by the department in Winter Park. Smith took over his new duties Tuesday, according to action of the board. He formerly was chief of the department for three years. At his own request the Civil Service Board made him assistant chief when Erwin was brought to Winter Park from the State Fire College in Ocala. “Any action the board takes in choosing a new chief will be made on a six months’ probation-ary basis,” said Frank William-son, chairman. Board members indicated the new chief will be brought up from the ranks through the ex-amination route. Presently four departmental members are eligible to take the chief’s examination-Smith, Capt. City officials, in preparing t h e i r annual budget last November, planned for an ex-penditure of approximately $45,-000 to put the new men on the job for the next eight months of the current fiscal year. In addition, the new fire station is expected to cost the city slightly more than $62,000. EMPLYOMENT of the three Negro firemen on the staff represents the first successful attempt to integrate the fire department. City officials dur-ing the past several years have carried on a recruiting cam-paign to find qualified Negroes to fill jobs in the department. Previously, a number of Negro a p p l i c a n t s were disqualified due to poor applicant exam scores and other factors. However, a recent advertising campaign sponsored by the city ro interest qualified Negroes produced a number of applicants including the three new men. W. P. Herald, August, 1972 August Fire Chief Robert S. Bair died the last day of this month. He had headed the Fire Department for over 15 years. He was a charter member and past president of the Florida Fire Chiefs Association, the Orange County Fire Chiefs-Association and a member of the International Fire Chiefs Association. Chief Bair welded the Winter Park Fire Department into one of the finest in the nation. He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.
