Thursday, March 1, 1934 Price 10 Gents FANNIE HURST RAVES OVER WINTER PARK By Marge Lockman, Seeing Fannie Hurst for the first time one immediately thinks of bright lights and fashionable and rather "ultra" gatherings—Palm Beach, Newport, Broadway. Miss Hurst in her manner, her dress and her personality, typifies the modern sophisticate in every sense of the word. Therefore one rather hesitated to ask her opinion of such a relatively quiet and conservative community as Winter Park. The answer might be—well, merely polite. But.Miss Hurst raved. A charming and quiet rave, but a rave nevertheless. In her deep attractive voice she told that it was her first visit to Florida and that heretofore Florida to her had meant two places—Palm Beach and Miami. She admitted that it was probably her own fault, but that just the same when she decided to come to Florida those were the only places she even thought of visiting. And then she came to Winter Park last week a few days early for her appearance on the Animated Magazine. "Three days in Palm Beach," Miss Hurst said, "and I decided I had seen all of Florida I cared to. Everything- there is overdone, exaggerated. The colors too bright, noises too loud, the sun-tanned backs too tan, the people too obviously trying to have a gay time. I grew dreadfully tired of watching pretty young women do imitation jui-jitsu on the beach for the benefit of movie cameras. Awful. After a few days of this the contrast of your Winter Park was breath-taking." "You people of Winter Park should rise up and bay to the moon," she said. No less a distinguished figure than the Count Rene de Chambrun, great-great-grandson of the Marquis de Lafayette, will be the guest of honor and chief speaker. Music will be furnished by a floating orchestra and the lake "will be lighted by magnesium flares. The Boy Scouts will co-operate under the direction of Scout Captain Peeples, and during the course of the program the Sea Scouts, commanded by Skipper Akin, will give an exhibition of flag signalling. Participation of all boats on the lakes is invited. Japanese lanterns may be secured, from R. F. Leedy Co., Winter Park, and should be ordered promptly. With sailing craft, row-boats, and canoes in tow of motor boats, the flotilla will enter South Bay upon bugle signal at 8:30. The maneuvers may be seen from the lake shore ends of Osceola Court, Chase Avenue, Morse Boulevard, and Canton Avenue, or from the grounds of the Virginia Inn and the Seminole Hotel. Owners of boats are requested to decorate them with flags and lanterns and to report before dark to the Club Station at Porto Bello, on the east shore of the North Bay, opposite the Seminole Hotel. I cannot begin to tell you what a delightful time I am having. It is no wonder that in such an atmosphere one should find so many people doing fine creative things in the world of literature and art." Asked if she could be quoted, the novelist replied, "Most decidedly. I shall be delighted." The conversation quite naturally drifted to women and the sphere they occupy in the world today and centered on what Mr. Hitler is attempting to do with the womanhood of his country by insisting that they return to the old days and concentrate on cooking, homemaking and child-bearing and leave the progress of arts, letters and business entirely in the hands of the men. "It is a great pity to struggle for years to take three steps forward only to be forced to take two steps backward," said Miss Hurst, "but it can be but a temporary condition. Women have fought too hard and too valiantly to achieve the place they now occupy in society to relinquish it without a fight. The fight has been so hard for the last three years due to the psychological effect of world-wide depression, that women are just a little tired; just a little winded after the long climb. There is at present a tendency, not only in Germany, but even in this country, for women to relax and mentally 'let go,' but I feel that it is just a breathing spell. They will come back, and with a bang. Women of today in this country are fortunate in having such a woman as Eleanor Roosevelt to look to for leadership. She is the greatest impetus for progress that we have." Because Miss Hurst has worked in all sorts of jobs from salesgirl to waitress, and has achieved outstanding1 success as one of America's foremost novelists, she knows the world from the seamy side up and the smooth side down. One feels that Fannie Hurst quite probably knows what she's talking about! Her latest novel, "Anitra's Dance," has just been completed. This luncheon will be the official participation of Rollins in the nation- wide observance of the centennial of Lafayette's death. The chief speaker will be the brilliant young Rene de Chambrun, son of the great general of the World War and nephew of the late Nicholas Longworth. Participating in the program will be descendants of the members of the Legislative Council of Florida of 1825, which Council passed a flowery resolution inviting General Lafayette to become a citizen of Florida. At the library of Rollins throughout the afternoon of March 11th, will be exhibited documents and memorabilia relating to the Lafayette township near Tallahassee and other French Florida papers. ZOE SHIPPEN JEWETT TO SPEND MONTH HERE Zoe Shippen Jewett, noted portrait painter, ...arriyed, last,, week from New York City to spend a month with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene R. Shippen, at their home Casa Felice on Park Ave, Mrs. Jewett spent some time in Winter Park last season and painted portraits of many prominent local people, among them Dean Charles A. Campbell, Dr. and Mrs. Albert Shaw, Miss Helen Moore, Hugh McKean, JVtiss Barbara Coxe, Dr. W. P. Mason, Mrs. Q. Blakeley, and the grandchildren of Mrs. John J. Carty. A group of portraits by Mrs. Jewett was recently exhibited at the Fontainebleau exhibit in New York. SWISS EXHIBIT AT DICKSON - IVES A number of prominent Winter Parkians saw the Swiss exhibit at Dickson-Ives in Orlando Monday and were charmed by it. Prof. J. J. Pfister, of Rollins, stated to Winter Park Topics that it was one oi the most artistic and interesting displays shown here. The exhibition comprises the products of sixty-five Swiss home industries, including wood and ivory carving, handkerchiefs, embroideries., pottery, toys, children's dresses and hand woven linens. All the articles except some valuable museum pieces are on sale. In connection with the portraits Jean Jacques Pfister of the Rollins Art Department painted for the permanent collection of the Rollins Library (which were unveiled Saturday morning by the Rollins Alumni in the Pounders' Week program), Mi*. Pfister is showing a number of important paintings which have never before been exhibited in Florida. The portraits occupy the main wall of the gallery. Miss Lucy A. Cross was "Precursor of Rollins" and with Rev. Charles M. Bingham co-laborer was a pioneer in the founding of Rollins College. The portrait of Rev. Charles Grandison Fairchild, painted by R. H. McKelvey, was also unveiled, Rev. Fairchild having been president of Rollins from 1891 to 1895. Mr. Pfister's painting "Battered but Unbowed" is a lovely rather tonal painting of the old cypress trees in California near historic Monterey. Perhaps Mr. Pfister's most important painting in this small exhibition is "The Strange Forest," a picture of famous Signal Hill, Long Beach, oil fields, known as the richest in the world. The great canvas was painted in inspirational mood, with no lagging of interest as the artist was faithful to details of derrick, drum and last glows of a setting sun. This painting was originally shown in the Stendall Galleries, Los Angeles. One of Mr. Pfister's most successful and delightful landscapes is "Lake Virginia in Moonlight," with the clouds lighted by an invisible moon and Spanish moss draping the oaks into graceful line. The portrait of "Dr. Buell," unfinished, will be of interest to many of Winter Park who knew him as a part of the Rollins College campus, though not of the faculty. Mr. Pfister also shows "The Lone Eagle," a companion painting to his famous " 'We' at Daybreak," and "Autumn in New Hamphire." A real estate authority in nearby Orlando says that there are in Winter Park more attractive homesites than anywhere else in Central Florida. When the buying wave again comes, as come1 it will, the land available in Winter Park will be at a premium. II Fannie Hurst says she never knew any places in Florida but Palm Beach and Miami until she came to Winter Park for the "Animated Magazine." Now she is an enthusiastic admirer. Probably many others would repeat this experience. Miss Hurst is discriminating. The suicidal efforts of radio stations are nowhere more annoying than during the Saturday afternoon broadcasts of the Metropolital Opera Company. Some local station nearby ruthlessly chatters all through the afternoon making it impossible to enjoy the music. Such things diminish the popularity of the radio generally. / / — • The performance of "Death Takes a Holiday" was a splendid tribute to the dramatic department of Rollins. Well staged and effectively acted the play served as a most interesting entertainment for the noted visitors who were present. Richard Shattuek' voice,—rich, deep and ear satisfying, coupled to his powei'ful figure, gave the production an impressive realism. MOST PERFECT BOOK Addressing members of the Winter Park Women's Club at their meeting last Friday on "The Romance of the Book," Dr. Edwin O. Grover of the faculty of Rollins College used his own rare and valuable manuscripts to illustrate his talk. Interesting was Dr. Grover's statement that the Gutenberg Bible, the first type-printed book, was still considered the most perfect and beautiful book in the world. He attributed this fact to the passion for absolute perfection which Gutenberg felt for his work, and which is rarely displayed in our fast-moving modern times. Though the two chiefly concerned in the affair are probably pained and irritated, to say the least, Winter Park was afforded a chuckle last week over the marooning of Mr. and Mrs. J. Gamble Rogers on their island home in Lake Maitland. It seems that while Mrs. Rogers was attending a beach party at Titusville and Mr. Rogers was working in his home, a large and heavy oil truck attempted to navigate the small bridge connecting the Isle of Sicily with the mainland. Disaster immediately resulted for the truck, the bridge and Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. Both the Rogers' cars were on the island with Mr. Rogers and both the Rogers' dogs were on this side with Mrs. Rogers. The truck was on the bridge and the bridge was in the water. It was complicated and upsetting. Valiant neighbors came to the rescue, however, with the "loan" of a row-boat and an automobile and now Mr. and Mrs. Rogers are ferrying back and forth for their various activities. The only complication, according to Mrs. Rogers, occurs when she has to go somewhere after Mr. Rogers has crossed and left the ferry on the other side. It is not known just when the new bridge will be finished. SOCIETY ATTENDS "POP" EN MASSE Flags of all nations transformed Recreation Hall into a gay and colorful background for the bright costumes of guests attending the eighth annual benefit for the Winter Park Symphony Orchestra. About 400 socially prominent attended the party, arranged by Miss Mary C. Leonard, manager and founder of the orchestra. Feature of the evening was the grand march around the hall, following which prizes were awarded for the most outstanding costumes in various groups. The Italian peasant costumes worn by college girls who acted as waitresses were an added note of gaiety. Most of the guests were in costume, which this year were of all periods and all nations. "My memory of King Albert is as a great, good and kind man rather than a king," stated Dr. Rosalie Morton, who met the king several times in her capacity as Commissioner of the American Red Cross during the war. "He was a beloved ruler, but more than that he was the man that every Belgian looked to as his greatest friend. No one who knew him during the great war will ever forget his heroic and unswerving interest in his suffering people, without thought of self. His death is a great loss to humanity." Gen. Avery D. Andrews, who is wintering at the Lincoln Apartments, was assistant chief of the general staff under Gen. John J. Pershing and was in Europe throughout the length of the war.
