Winter Park Outlook 9/15/1988 – September 15, 1988
PESO to auction off piece of Alabama Hotel
An antique breakfront from the original Alabama Hotel sits in a room cluttered with pieces of old and broken furniture at Rad’s Refinishing Shop in Maitland. PESO hopes to tsell the breakfront and donate the proceeds to local arts’ organizations (Missy Clark photo)

Winter Park – For several months, a piece of Winter Park’s early history has been gathering dust at a local antique and refinishing shop.
The large breakfront, or sideboard, believed to be more than 100 years old, was once part of the elegant Alabama Hotel.
It’s last owners, Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Booth, donated the unique – and very valuable – piece to PESO to be auctioned off at one of the organization’s annual fund-raising auctions for the arts.
But since PESO has, for the most part, discontinued its auction, the breakfront has sat idle and virtually unnoticed at Rad’s Refinishing Shop in Maitland.
Ernest Caldwell, associate director of PESO, is working to generate interest in the piece and hopes to sell it through a written bidding process.
All proceeds would go toward PESO’s ongoing support of local arts organizations.
PESO, a division of Arts Inc., is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial support for 12 major cultural groups throughout Central Florida. Since its inception in 1968, it has distributed over $1,800,000. Its beneficiaries include the Bach Festival Society, Crealde Arts Inc., Florida Symphony Orchestra, Maitland Art Association and the Morse Museum of Art, just to name a few.
The breakfront, circa 1870 – 1890, is made of pine and burl pine with leaded glass cabinet doors. It is 8 feet long, 67 inches high and 27 inches deep. Although Caldweel did not wish to reveal its total appraisal value, he said the piece is worth “several thousand dollars.”
“This would make a very beautiful addition to an antique collector’s home or could be used as a wonderful display piece in a store,” said Caldwell.
The breakfront can be seen at Rad’s Refinishing, 2310 N. Park Ave, Maitland, just below the intersection of Park and Orlando avenues. Bid forms are available at Rad’s and should be returned to the PESO office by Sept. 30.</text>
