The skies over Winter Park will be quieter in the future, if the airport authorities adopt the recommendation made Friday by the Aviation Noise Abatement Council. The advisory board has recommended cutting in half the number of direct northerly take-offs from Orlando International Airport. Residents from Winter Park and Lake Conway have been complaining for over a year about a noise and air pollution caused by increased air traffic over their areas. As a result of a new take-off pattern being tested by the FAA since October, 1984, aircraft taking off to the north were flying directly over Winter Park instead of turning 60 degrees to the east as they had in the past. According to airport authorities about 20 flights have been using the direct northerly take-off daily. That’s only about 23 percent of the airport’s 175 daily flights but it is too much for many Winter Park residents. If the Aviation Authority and FAA adopt ANAC’s recommendation, the number of direct northerly take-offs will reduce to about 10 daily. It’s a compromise, but still not enough to satisfy Winter Park’s Mayor Hope Strong. “I would like to see all air traffic routed away from Winter Park and over unpopulated areas,” said Mayor Strong. Strong believes that if enough efforts and resources are expanded, the authorities can find a way to route all to accommodate the people of Winter Park and other populated areas as well as provide air safety for the flights. Part of the authority’s reasoning behind the due north take-off pattern was that it made departure safer for aircraft and the communities below. Strong joined the hundreds of residents voicing complaints last month when he drafted a letter to the authorities and to several state officials. Strong urged a return to the original 60 degree turn-out departure, and he asked for the support of elected state representatives such as Rep. Bill McCollum. “Bill McCollum has been very supportive of our cause,” said Mayor Strong, “as have Dr. David Varney and other members of the ANAC advisory board.” A large crowd turned up at the ANAC meeting last month when it was thought that a recommendation concerning the departure pattern would be made. The advisory board, influenced and concerned over the strong show of public opinion, tabled the issue for further investigation until this month’s meeting. The meeting last Friday was more low-key, and most who attended seemed satisfied with ANAC’s recommendation, which was based on statistical evaluations and noise complaints monitored since last year. ANAC’s recommendation retains the due north take offs but restricuts them to 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. instead of the present schedule of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. If adopted, the number of flights will be considerably less but officials said the number will vary largely from day to day depending on weather conditions. Cold fronts and strong wind currents will force flights normally taking off to the south to use the northerly take-off route. Airport director Jack Gilooly said the Aviation Authority and FAA will probably test the new compromise take-off plan for a year before officially adopting it. By Jack Snyder, Real Estate Editor The outside has changed very little. Vines still encompass the elegant old hotel from top to bottom. But inside, the Alabama Hotel in Winter Park, once a refuge for Northerners escaping harsh winters, is undergoing a radical transformation. By next march the change will be completed and 22 luxury condominiums will have replaced the hotel’s 66 rooms. The Alabama is the only survivor of the several luxury hotels that once housed wealthy visitors each winter. Among those that have disappeared are The Altamonte Hotel, overlooking Lake Orienta in Altamonte Springs, The Seminole Hotel and The Virginia Inn in Winter Park and the Wyoming Hotel in Orlando. The Altamonte Hotel was destroyed by fire and the otheres were dismantled or razed to make way for other projects. Hotel activity at The Alabama off Palmer Avenue on Lake Maitland came to a halt last year. It didn’t take long to catch a developer’s eye. Developer Charles M. Booth Jr., who is handling the project in partnership with engineer Charles M. Simmerson, said it was just luck that he heard about the old hotel’s availability. Interest was immediate because the hotel seemed a natural for conversion to condominium apartments, he said. But there was opposition from some area residents to the conversion. Objectors said they would prefer the old hotel be razed to make room for a single-family home development rather than have condominiums in their midst. Despite opposition, the city OK’s the project arguing that the landmark should be saved and the proposed conversion would maintain the character and appearance of the hotel. Booth said that everything but the exterior walls and interior load-bearing walls is being replaced to create the 22 units within the hotel. Three buildings on the grounds – the property totals 3.85 acres – also are being turned into condominiums. The two and three-bedroom apartments (there’ll be one one-bedroom unit because of the way the design worked out) will range from 1,400 to 2,500 square feet. Prices will be lofty – from $140,000 to $250,000. Designing the conversion is Lopatka-McQuaig and Associates, a Winter Park architectural firm. The site was once the home of W.C. Temple, a businessman who first began coming to Winter Park in 1897 to escape the winters in Pennsylvania. One of the organizers of the Florida Citrus Exchange – forerunner of Seald-Sweet Growers, an organization of citrus cooperatives – Temple served as mayor of Winter Park and was active in promoting the area. The Temple orange is named for him. In 1915, Temple sold the Lake Maitland proptery and in 1922 the hotel was built by a Joseph Kronenberger, a Cleveland businessman.
