Text Any textual data included in the document Eulalie Osgood Grover   Dates: 1902-1958   Provenance: Created by Eulalie Osgood Grover?   Related Materials: Sunbonnet Babies books, My Caravan, Benjamin Franklin, and other books by Eulalie Osgood Grover   Historical Note: Eulalie Osgood Grover was born on 6/22/1873 in Mantorville, Minnesota. When she was still young her father, Congregationalist minister Nahum Wesley Grover, moved the family back to New England, where she grew up.   In 1891 she graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, where a fellow student prophesied she wtmld become a children's writer. After graduation she taught primary grades at.. Dow Academy in Franconia, New Hampshire for three years. She spent the next two years in Germany and France, studying French.   Upon returning to the United States she found little need for her French, but upon seeing Bertha <ol> <li>Corbett's drawings, she felt compelled to write a children's reading primer, The Sunbonnet Babies. Clear and straightforward with a continuing story, The Sunbonnet Babies were soon joined by The Overall Boys and several more stories that advanced with grades. In 1911 Eulalie Osgood Grover returned to Europe to write the Babies and Boys' adventures in Holland, Italy, and Switzerland.</li> </ol>   Eulalie Osgood Grover lived six years in a Chicago suburb before living twenty years in Oberlin, Ohio, with her brother Frederick, a professor of botany. In 1926 she moved with her brother Edwin to Winter Park. The family stayed nine months of the year in Winter Park, spending the summers in North Carolina.   She collected rare children's books, gardened, studied children's folklore, and of course continued to write, eventually writing a biography of Robert Louis Stevenson. In 1953 she published a high-school level biography of Benjamin Franklin.   On December 25, 1958, Eulalie Osgood Grover died of bronchitis at the age of 85. In lieu of flowers the family requested donations to the Hannibal Square Library, given her interest in it.   Scope and Content Note: Created by Eulalie Osgood Grover, resident of Winter Park 1926- 1958. Included is correspondence from various political figures (state and national), records of her legislative activities and materials from her various senatorial campaigns. The majority of the materials was generated by Hawkins (from her conduct of official and public duties and business) and can provide the researcher with both a survey of Florida's political environment in the 1970's and 1980's, and a profile of Hawkins as a politician. On a broader scale, the collection provides a look into the activities and issues that were of interest to the Florida Congressional Delegation during her terms in Congress (1980-1986). Issues include: the Cross-Florida Barge Canal, immigration, the citrus industry/agriculture, foreign trade, and illegal drugs. In summary the collection contains that when used in conjunction with other sources (papers of political and historically important figures) can provide a comprehensive picture of Florida's political climate during a period of political conservatism and re-emergence of the Republican Party in state politics.   Scope and content: The collection covers her political career from 1969 to 1986. The bulk of the material comes from her Senate period (1980-1986). Text Any textual data included in the document Eula Pearl Jenkins   Dates: 1936-2002   Historical Note:   Eula Pearl was born on August 19, 1918 in Reynolds, Georgia. She moved to Orlando, in 1937. She attended the Colored Business School in 1946 and 1947.   In 1954, she graduated from Jones High School as valedictorian at the age of 38, married W.C. Jenkins, and moved to Winter Park. The couple was involved in the Masons. Throughout her life she was a devoted churchgoer involved in children and youth ministries. Among her many church activities, she served as President of Church Women United. She also sang, studying voice, piano, and organ. She spent eight years in the Bach Festival Choir.   Eula Jenkins encouraged learning and was a longtime member of the Black Advisory Committee for Valencia.  Her husband died in 1982.  To promote education and honor her deceased mother by having a child graduate college (she was the last living of ten siblings) she enrolled at Valencia in 2000 at the age of 82. In April 2001 she received the first "Dare to Dream" award for this and her other acts supporting learning.   Scope and Content Note: Eula Pearl Jenkins moved to Winter Park in 1954. Condition - good.   Three "Keep the Promise" (1994/95) yellow/orange folders. 1 folder contains photographs of the WP Day Care Center Christmas party. 1 folder contains photographs of the "Winter Park Kiwanis Children/Priority #1" event. 1 folder is labeled "Governors Visit Div 25 - Dec. 6, 1994" and contains photographs of that event.   One yellow/orange folder containing a program and photographs of"Governor's Official Visit District 25 Florida District, Kiwanis International, February 2, 1996.   One yellow/orange folder containing a program and photographs of"The Florida District of Kiwanis International - Midwinter Conference - February 16 -  18, 1996 -  Hyatt Regency - Tampa Center.   One blue folder containing photographs of the "Pick an Angel" program, 1995 (Christmas)   Approximately 100 (plus or minus a few) color photographs, 3"X5". Text Any textual data included in the document BUCKLIN MOON MANUSCRIPT COLLECTION   <h1> </h1> Extent: 1 linear foot; 3 boxes     Biographical note:   Bucklin Renssalear Moon was born on May 13, 1911, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. His parents were Chester D. Moon, a lumberman in the Midwest, and Edith Bucklin  Moon. He had two sisters, Peggy and Marjorie. In his early years, Bucklin Moon wandered through a series of prep schools, including Snyder School in Captiva Island, Rivers School in Boston, Fessenden in Massachusetts, and Shattuck Military Academy in Fairbault, Minnesota, before relocating to Florida.   Bucklin Moon entered Rollins College in 1929, and withdrew in 1930 to work on his stuttering problem. He returned the following year and graduated with an AB. in history in 1934. While at Rollins, he studied under Edwin Granberry, author of the 0. Henry Prize-winning story "A Trip to Czardis" (1932) and such Florida novels as The Erl King (1930). Moon was a member of the X Club, the college football team, and an associate editor of the campus student publication Flamingo. While at Rollins He became friendly with Zora Neale Hurston, who visited the college's creative writing class regularly and presented her folk plays in the college theater. Bucklin married Elizabeth (Betty) Frederica Vogler, (Rollins '32) on April 11, 1936.   Bucklin Moon's professional writing career began after he became a literary editor for Doubleday (1940-1951) His first book, The Darker Brother, a Book-of-the-Month Club alternate for 1943, traces the life of a young black man who leaves Winter Park for Harlem in search of the promised land. In 1945 Moon became the first white person to publish an anthology of writing by and about black America in A Primer for White Folks. Two years later he published The High Cost of Prejudice. His finest work, Without Magnolias, an account of a black family in Winter Park and Orlando, was published in 1949. It won the George Washington Carver Award of $2,500 for the best book of the year by or about blacks.   Although he later edited The Doubleday Anthology in 1962, Moon's writing career largely ended when the U.S. House of Representatives Un-American Activities Committee accused him, along with Marlon Brando, Judy Holliday, and Lee L. Cobb, of being part of the Communist peace initiative. A fiction editor for Collier's Magazine at the time, he denied the charge and fought it. When Collier's fired him in 1953, Commonweal compared him to Joseph K. in Kafka's The Trial. Unemployed, divorced, and depressed, he attempted suicide. Eventually he returned to editing and married Ann Curtis Brown, but realized his life had changed profoundly. (:, Moon headed to Marco Island. An avid fisherman, he always found himself attracted to the water. Returning to New York, he collected his dogs, Mumsie and Alice, from Marion Heldt, the woman whom he then called the Dog Lady and later married after the death of Ann Curtis Brown. They eventually settled in Tavernier, Florida. A Doubleday Anthology (Doubleday)   Collection:   This collection reflects the writing career of Bucklin Moon and his connection with Winter Park, Florida,  and Rollins  College.  The most interesting  parts of the collection are Moon's handwritten manuscripts on various topics ranging from politics to book editing; and his typewritten, unpublished memoir with handwritten revisions. The collection contains material donated in by Marion Moon. This collection is the resultant product of Dr. Maurice O'Sullivan's study of Bucklin Moon during 2001 - 2002.
