DECEMBER 30, 1915   CIVIC BLD’G LOCATION: Will Be On Southwest Corner Chapman and Lyman Ave.: The Donor of Building Refuses to Make Known His Identity.             The location of the new six thousand dollar court house to be erected in Winter Park will be on the west side of Chapman Avenue on the south west corner of Chapman and Lyman. The lots purchased 111 ft. front and 140 ft. deep, being directly south of the Ingram house.             This will allow the building to be put back from the street as far as the residences usually are in Winter Park and yet have plenty of room back of the building for the city to establish their fire engine house and any other buildings they may require for the fire and street cleaning departments.             Henry Green, who built the New Seminole Hotel, will build the new civic building and will rush it to completion just as soon as council pnts<a href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1">[1]</a> its final seal of approval on the entire transaction.             The donor of the $5,000 for the town hall makes it a condition of his donation that his identity shall not be disclosed, as he is not paying this money for advertising purposes but simply for the good of the town which he loves.       Golf Notes.             “The holidays over, the ladies will now go in for golf with enthusiasm. Daily lessons are being given by Mr. George and we shall soon have enough material for some promising tournaments this winter. Practice your mashie and the allusive putt, ladies; you will need them in Court Golf!             Among those seen on the links this week are the following: Miss Burns, Miss Foley and Mrs. Dickson from the Seminole; Miss Pinne, Miss List, Mrs. Von Utassy and Miss Waide from the Inn; and the gentlemen included Mr. Robert Treat Paine and Mr. C.P. George arrived last week and will assist his brother at the golf club this season. Mr. George was here last season and is the professional at Minnatanka, Minn., during the summer.”       CLUB NOTES             Mrs. Frank E. Jennings, of Jacksonville, editor of the Florida department of the Women’s Club Magazine, the Magazine published by the national organization of Woman’s Clubs, writes to Mrs. Hiram Powers that the February number will feature Winter Park exclusively in the State Department. As this Magazine has a great circulation all over the country it will call. the attention of thousands of readers to the attractions of this place, and also shows what a very live club is in our midst to command such notice from the State Editor.               The class in American Literature was postponed two weeks owing to the heavy rain storm of Monday and will meet on January 3rd.   The annual meeting of the Woman’s Club will be held on January 15, at the Hooker Memorial Hall when the election of officers for the year will take place.       FINE PROOF OF PROSPERITY: Santa Claus Finds Only Hand Full Of Poor Children: Three Hundred Presents Had Been Provided But Only 30 Were Needed.             According to mayor<a href="#_ftn2" name="_ftnref2">[2]</a> Temple when the Christmas tree idea was first broched<a href="#_ftn3" name="_ftnref3">[3]</a> in Winter Park it was determined that there should be no poor child in this district without a Christmas present of some kind. The number of poor children could only be guessed at and the first guess was made at 150 and a Winter Park citizen purchased and turned over to the ladies<a href="#_ftn4" name="_ftnref4">[4]</a> committee 150 presents in accordance with this estimate. Fearing less the estimate was too low and to avoid any possibillity<a href="#_ftn5" name="_ftnref5">[5]</a> of there being a giftless child in and around Winter Park, another citizen presented the ladies’ committee with 150 silk United States flags, thus making 300 presents available in case of need; and then for the first time the committee felt absolutely safe. The next step was to locate the children who were to receive these presents and a canvas was made of all the churches, Sunday schools, day schools, the charitable societies, and the post office, thereby, covering every possible avenue of contact with the poor, and when this work was all done and the names all tabulated from all these sources of information it was found that the total poor children to be provided for in the entire Winter Park district was less than thirty. In the words of Mayor Temple, “a higher testimonial to the progressiveness, wealth and prosperity of the town and its vicinity than this could scarcely be imagined- a grand total of less than thirty indigent children in a population of more than a thousand!”             The result was that the poor children who attended had more presents than they could carry home and there were still an enormous number left over to be divided among the pupils of the schools whom the teachers recommended as being especially apt in the God-like spirit of helping others.       At The Inn.             Among the arrivals at The Inn are: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Calloway, of Baltimore, for the season; Mr. and Mrs. Waide and their daughter Miss Margery Waide, of Wellesley Hills, Boston; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Treat Paine, of Washington, D.C.; Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett and Miss Bartlett, of West Virginia; Mr. and Mrs. Smith Hood, of West Virginia; and Dr. and Mrs. E.A. The Club believes in singing good old fashioned “sings” where everybody joins in. You do not need o<a href="#_ftn7" name="_ftnref7">[7]</a> be an artist or to have completed a course of lessons to be eligible for the “sing.” Books of popular songs have been distributed over the whole town at the very moderate price of ten cents. It is hoped everyone will buy one and come out promptly on Friday evening ready to “lend their voice” to the occasion. This means you.             On Saturday night the colored people will take charge of the tree, and many think it will be the best night of the week. We all know they are natural born singers. They are preparing a real treat for us and will be well worth hearing. Every one is urged to come and bid the tree farewell for on that night when the lights go out the Community Tree will have ended its career.             The Celebration of Christmas Eve around the community Christmas tree, which was over forty feet high topped by a star of Bethlehem in colored lamps, will long be remembered in Winter Park. The exercises on the first night opened up by singing by the children of the schools. More than one hundred and fifty boys and girls took part in the singing. Then Dr. W.F. Blackman made an interesting address at the close of which he introduced Mayor Temple and the mayor talked to the little children, impressing upon them the wonder and blessedness of Christmas time and telling them what the grownups expected of good little children. After this, seventy-five large silk United States flags and sixty smaller ones, gifts of the Women’s Club were handed out to the school children who waved them joyously and sang “My Country Tis of Thee.” Then, Santa Claus appearing to be late in arriving, a detail of Boy Scouts were sent to find him, which having been done they drew him and his cart in triumph to the tree to the wondering delight of the youngsters, after which Santa Claus delivered his presents to the assembled children and they were all made happy. The gifts consisted of sterling silver sewing sets; juvenile typewriters; dolls; games; embroidery sets; and filled stockings by the dozen.             It was estimated that nearly a thousand people attended the exercises. They came from as far north as Sanford, as far south as Kissimmee, from Oviedo on the east, and from Winter Garden of the west. The main streets and the side streets were thronged not only with autos and carriages, but there were in evidence many mule-drawn vehicles in the shape of wagons, packed full of good old fashioned Cracker chairs with cow hyde? seats.             The tree has been such a success that it is hoped to have it a regular annual performance on Christmas Eve, and to make it better and bigger each year.             An amusing incident occurred during the exercises on Christmas Eve. A little tot about six years old, draging<a href="#_ftn8" name="_ftnref8">[8]</a> his nurse by the hand, worked his way through the group surrounding the mayor at the close of the exercises and in a tearful voice, gave his name and home address in Connecticut to the mayor, asking him if he would’nt? please tell Santa Claus before Santy got away that the little boy was not at home but was to be found in room nb. _____ at The Inn, and that he had forgotten to send Santy his change of address and would be afraid that Santy would’nt<a href="#_ftn9" name="_ftnref9">[9]</a> know where to find him.             The cold weather of Saturday night was a great disappointment after the balmy promise of Christmas morning and the charming program of the Methodist and Congregational Sunday Schools had to be given in Hooker Memorial Hall. In order to avoid confusion the tree was not lighted that night.             On Monday night, however, the fates were again propitious and under a starry sky a great crowd assembled about the tree. The evening’s entertainment was given by the Camp Fire Girls and Boy Scouts of Winter Park, and never was a prettier sight witnessed. The blazing bonfires and Indian costumes of the girls, their songs and rhythmic swaying motions held their large audience spell bound. The Boy Scouts were no less successful. Once more the fires were kindled; the tent and flag pole was raised; “the twist” was fearfully and wonderfully made to the great enjoyment of the ladies present. The wounded were bandaged; the drownded resuscitated; Scout Foley was initiated (and) all the various activities and stunts of the Scouts were represented.              The band concert on Tuesday evening lent a varied character to the week’s entertainments and was greatly enjoyed by everybody.             Much credit is due to Mrs. Halverstadt of the Women’s Club, and to the ladies on the Christmas tree committee of which she was chairman, for their untiring industry and their generous help in their wish to make the tree a success. The club stood back of the committee financially and otherwise and the ladies on the committee were: Mrs. Halverstadt, Chairman; Mrs. Hunter, Mrs. Batchelor, Mrs. Cushman, Mrs. Foley. Will Be Ready Jan. 15.             No later than January 15th, the Winter Park Telephone Co., will send to the printers its new telephone directory with a list of over one hundred and fifty subscribers which will show an increase of one hundred and twenty subscribers over the number represented in the first directory which was gotten out by the company in 1914 and an increase of seventy-five or more over the second directory gotten out in 1915.             New telephones are now being installed by the Winter Park Telephone Company at the rate of ten a week, and all persons desiring telephone service are requested to get their applications in as soon as possible so that their names and telephone numbers may be shown in the new directory.             On the second page of the directory will appear the following “Important Instructions and Suggestions to telephone users:”             “LOCAL SERVICE”             “Always call by number, not by name.             “After the printing of this directory all new subscribers and their number will be printed in the local newspaper and you can keep your directory up to date by cutting them out and pasting herein.             “In case of trouble or unsatisfactory service report to No. 438.             “Telephone numbers should not be published on stationary, in advertisements on wagons, etc. The telephone number is the property of the telephone company and is likely to be changed as the business develops with the growth and progress of the community.”             There have been several complaints about the way some telephone subscribers answer the phone. The following suggestions are offered: In answering the telephone, so not say “hello,” or “well” or “what der-ye-want,” or some other expression of ferocity; just speak your number. The person calling you will then know all that is necessary without having to go through disconcerting, time-waisting*? preliminaries. If your number happened to be 438, for instance, in answering your telephone just take up the receiver and say “438.” The person at the other end of the line will then be ready to go ahead with what they want to say.             A new lineman and telephone man, Edward Strickland of New York, has been engaged by C.H. Galloway, manager of the Winter Park Telephone Company, and he started in to work Monday morning. He is an experienced man and will be a valuable addition to the service.       Administration to Be Changed By Coming Election.: Causes of Registered Voters Called For Jan. 6th. ---Election Feb. 1, 1916.             A caucus of the citizens of Winter Park who are registered voters is called at the Hooker Memorial Hall on Thursday evening, January 6th at 7:30 o’clock to nominate the candidates for city offices of the town of Winter Park to be voted for at the city election which will be held in accordance with the law on Tuesday, February 1st, 1916.             There will at this election be elected a mayor, a town marshal, a city clerk, who is also ex-officio tax assessor, and town treasurer. There will also be four alderman elected the terms of office of Messrs. Harris, Keezel, Powell, and Schultz expiring at that time.             As this election will elect a majority of council and a mayor, thereby completely changing the present administration, it is sincerely hoped that a large and representative meeting of the true citizenship of Winter Park will be present on this occasion in order to determine who they want to administer the city affairs of the two ensuing years.       All Have Accounts             In order that every school child in Winter Park might have his own or her own bank account the Bank of Winter Park has opened accounts for 139 children and deposited 25 c to the credit of each child.             The deposit was made in connection with the school savings bank which has been introduced into the school here by the Woman’s Club. The children deposit their money with the teachers and they in turn take it to the bank and credit it to the proper account. The bank is issuing little pass books specially gotten up for the children and as soon as a young depositor has as much as one dollar to the good a pass book is given out. No special check books will be issued, for, as Mr. Powell, cashier of the Bank of Winter Park, says, “it is not the desire of those interested to have the children save a dollar and then spend it, but to have them save a dollar and then save another.”             The deposit donated by the bank amounts to about $40. The bank will be put to quite a little extra expense to handle the account in the way of having to purchase special books to the extent of $75 or more.             Mr. Powell says that the children are responding to the bank idea and that already the deposit has been more than doubled. Tompkins of Peekskill, N.Y., arrived Dec. 24th, to spend the winter at the Altamonte Hotel.             The Christmas tree given at the Union Church, Christmas evening, by the whole community was a great success. The church which was very prettily decorated, was packed full, and everyone enjoyed the Christmas exercises of the Sunday school children who sang carols and recited ballards*. The tree was decorated by E.O. Marshall and Everett Bates. A Santa Claus arrived at the close of the singing and recitation, much to the delight of the younger members and disbursed the many beautiful presents, everyone in the church receiving a gift. The gifts were suppled by contributions from the entire community. The Lyman quartet rendered some very pleasing selections of music. BY CHOLLY WINTER             The social life of the average visitor to Winter Park becomes so delightful and the town itself, with its perfect climate, its shady avenues, its high grade hotels and its charming homes, nestling amid the surrounding lakes is so attractive, that it is sometimes difficult for the visitor to realize that there is much to be gained in excursions to the country round about.             One who is accustomed to city ways and is bound to a certain modicum of living, whose ideal landscape is best expressed by Central Park in New York or perhaps Boston Common, would find the typical Florida scenery surrounding us too unkept and woolly for fastidious eyes to approve of. But to the lover of nature, who appreciates her various forms, and above all, to those who have come to Florida to revel in the healthful out-of-doors, Winter Park can become a radial center to all sorts of new experiences and mild adventure.             In the early days of Winter Park when the former Seminole Hotel was filled with guests, there were fairly serious drawbacks to lengthy excursions. The country around Winter Park was certainly attractive even then, but there were no really good roads, and the vehicles available made but slow progress as compared with our modern automobiles. Notwithstanding these handicaps these early visitors discovered the charm of the country about then and their praise has mad this region famous.             Not all Florida roads are good, and even the efficient automobiles brought down by our present visitors, cannot be expected to save them from occasional jolts if they undertake to ee the surrounding country. Yet those who shrink from occasional rough going miss a great deal more than they are perhaps aware of, by insisting on limiting their excursions to brick-paved and smooth clay roads.              The great charm of this region grows upon us as we learn to know the spirit of the Florida scenery. Whether we go by water or by land, there is something indefinably alluring in the broad open forest, the dark patches of “hammock,”. The sunlit stretches of palmetto flats and the subtle softness and warmth of coloring. There is an odor of pines in the breeze and a sighing and rustling in the air. It takes us some time perhaps, to appreciate the call of the mocking bird, the cawing of distant crows, the beckoning of the swaying moss in the tree tops. But if once the great spirit of Florida pervades us, we learn to know and we learn to love this open country, until sandy roads and jolts are forgotten.             Space does not permit the describing in detail of the many lovely drives and water excursions which may be taken from winter Park, for they range all the way from simple picnic trips to fairly extensive tours, but it may not be amiss to suggest the mere outlines of what a visitor may try.             With a fair amount of health and strength, an average love of nature and yearning for a new experience, anyone may find another congenial soul to join in the enjoyment of a day or part of a day in the open country, taking a luncheon along to provide for the good appetite which is sure to reward the experiment. If a motor trip is planned, one may leave Winter Park and visit Wekiwa Spring, known locally as “Clay Spring.” This trip leads on thru a very interesting country and in parts a very beautiful one. The road varies from very good to quite poor in spots, but the excursion is worth while as the spring is exceedingly interesting. A mass of sulphurous water rushes out of the depths of a clear pool and in such volume as to form a good sized stream. Around the pool is a charming grove of great palm and oak trees which form a delightful spot for a picnic, and from here motorboat can be engaged to visit he<a href="#_ftn14" name="_ftnref14">[14]</a> beautiful Wekiwa river<a href="#_ftn15" name="_ftnref15">[15]</a>. This s<a href="#_ftn16" name="_ftnref16">[16]</a> a very popular resort for Orlando and Winter Park automobilists.                Another point well worth driving to and visiting is the famous Caladium gardens Of Dr. Nehrling at Gotha, westerly from Orlando. This truly wonderful collection of living color is the finest in the world, and a visit there takes one over very good roads all the way.             Florida is rapidly becoming known as a cattle country, and now that the age marks the passing of the genius “cowboy” in the West, it is interesting to visit the region around Kissimmee where the typical old time cowboy rounding up his cattle, is still to be seen on the broad plains not far from the city. The trip takes one over miles of smooth brick road south of Orlando.             One is surprised at the beauty of the landscape and the rolling, almost hilly country on the road to Eustis by way of Mount Dora. Lake Apopka, one of the largest lakes in Florida comes into view many times on this trip, and one passess<a href="#_ftn17" name="_ftnref17">[17]</a> through many beautiful regions as well. The road is very generally good, and if continued to Eustis leads one over about ninety miles before one returns to Winter Park, but by a rather sandy road, one may reach the famous “Sink Hole” not far from Lake Fairview. This is a truly wonderful depression in the soil. The “Hole” being site of a round pond, the waters of which are nearly four hundred feet deep. A drive to Sanford enables one to reach the shores of the water system of the St. John’s River. At the public dock in Sanford a delightful and beautiful water excursion may be made by engaging one of the several large motorboats usually anchored near by. After crossing Lake Monroe one enters the upper St. John’s river<a href="#_ftn18" name="_ftnref18">[18]</a> which is very winding and picturesque at this point, as far as Lemon Bluff, a regular picnic resort, at about the most charming point in the river. It is possible to return conveniently to Winter Park the same day.             Thus may a visitor add greatly to his enjoyment and that of his friends by excursion by land and water in the interest of health and happiness out of doors.   [Advertisement] Dr. F.C.
