Text Any textual data included in the document Eula Pearl Jenkins   Dates: 1936-2002   Historical Note:   Eula Pearl was born on August 19, 1918 in Reynolds, Georgia. She moved to Orlando, in 1937. She attended the Colored Business School in 1946 and 1947.   In 1954, she graduated from Jones High School as valedictorian at the age of 38, married W.C. Jenkins, and moved to Winter Park. The couple was involved in the Masons. Throughout her life she was a devoted churchgoer involved in children and youth ministries. Among her many church activities, she served as President of Church Women United. She also sang, studying voice, piano, and organ. She spent eight years in the Bach Festival Choir.   Eula Jenkins encouraged learning and was a longtime member of the Black Advisory Committee for Valencia.  Her husband died in 1982.  To promote education and honor her deceased mother by having a child graduate college (she was the last living of ten siblings) she enrolled at Valencia in 2000 at the age of 82. In April 2001 she received the first "Dare to Dream" award for this and her other acts supporting learning.   Scope and Content Note: Eula Pearl Jenkins moved to Winter Park in 1954. Miss Grover was born June 22, 1873, in Mantorville, Minnesota and moved to Winter Park in 1926. The Sunbonnet Babies Primer, published in 1902, was illustrated by Bertha L. Corbett and revolved around the adventures of Molly and May, two little girls whose faces were completely hidden by large sunbonnets. The primer was built around a 150-word vocabulary with later printings containing word lists to assist the teacher in picking out key words and phrases for emphasis. The Sunbonnet Babies Primer was a huge success and was widely accepted in public schools throughout the United states. In 1905 Miss Grover published a second series , The Overall Boys, which introduced little boy characters. Miss Grover's European travels provided ideas and material for Sunbonnet Babies in Holland, Sunbonnet Babies in Italy, and Sunbonnet Babies in Switzerland. These titles were primarily textbooks and used in conjunction with geography classes by second and third grade children. Miss Grover also wrote for junior and senior high school students.
