VIRGINIA INN'S VALENTINE PARTY BACHELLER URGES LINCOLN IDEALS INSPIRED PLAYING AT SUNDAY CONCERT The celebration of St. Valentine's Day at the Virginia Inn is one of Winter Park's traditions. The gnes-ts of the house and their many friends in the winter colony join together in an evening of entertainment that is always keenly anticipated. The program on Tuesday evening was inaugurated by a host of dinner parties for which the Inn was most attractively decorated with effective reminders of St. Valentine, A delightful series of vocal and instrumental numbers followed after which the minstrel show with popular Manager John J. Hennessy as interlocutor supplied no end of merriment with its numerous references to the happenings and personalities familiar to the guests. Warning his great audience of attentive listeners that the young people of today may live to see Hell set loose unless the evil tendencies of the time are overcome, the famous author, Mr. Irving Bacheller, made a stirring appeal for a revival of the ideals of Abraham Lincoln in his address at Knowles Chapel last Sunday. Striking highlights were: "My young friends, the Nero of greed seems to have captured the world and you must deliver it. Since St. , Paitl was taken by Rome there has been no greater war of the spirit than that you are facing and you cannot succeed unless you get in touch with a power not open to your enemies." (Continued on page 4) There was a thrill in the playing of the Symphony Orchestra last Sunday afternoon. It was in the very first number of a well played program that the writer experienced something of the uncanny,— that mysterious solvent which pierces deeply into the spirit. Weber's famous Overture to his gloomy opera "Der Freischutz" has been regarded by all great conductors from Richard Wagner down to the incomparable Toscanini with a reverence that is traditional. Conductor Harve Clemens was also under the spell of this magic music and his players were moved by it It is sure-fire music, inspiring to the players as well as to the audience. (Continued on page 4) Editor Hamilton Holt is putting something more than literature into the coming Eighth Issue of the "Animated Magazine" which will "appear" on the stand Sunday afternoon, February 25th, at 2:30. He has secured two members of President Roosevelt's Cabinet, Attorney General Homer S. Cummings and Commerce Secretary Daniel C. Roper, as contributors. The subjects of their articles have not been announced - but it is not likely that they will tell Bed Time Stories when everybody wants to hear about the New Deal, especially from headquarters. To bring these two distinguished leaders of the Administration from Washington to Winter Park is a master stroke of editorial acumen and strategy on the part of Editor Holt and is sure to attract the largest audience ever seen here for these unique events. In previous years it is estimated over five thousand have attended, coming from all parts of Florida and representing almost every State. It is a great day for Rollins and for Winter Park, and is a fine demonstration of how an original idea in the mind of a man of vision can produce an impressive result. The "Animated Magazine" will be issued this year from the stand just constructed at the corner of the large open block in front of the college buildings where it will be possible to accommodate many more "readers" than the former site adjoining Carnegie Hall. Mrs. Clinton Scollard, known in the world of letters as Jessie B. Rittenhouse, was the speaker on Tuesday evening before the Sorosis Club in Orlando. Mrs. Scollard, who is president of the Florida Poetry Society, spoke on "Modern Poetry," reading some of her own works and those of her late husband. She also described the Clinton Scollard Memorial at Hamilton College. Mrs. Walter B. Hine gave a most entertaining talk on flower arrangement at the Woman's Club yesterday afternoon before the members of the Garden Clubs of Winter Park, Orlando, Sanf ord and Maitland. BURTON RESTATES DICKENS ESTIMATE Dr. and Mrs. Oliver Howe are here from Cohasset, Mass., to make a visit of several weeks with the Misses Herron on Osceola Ave. Mrs. Howe is a delegate to the President's Council of the Garden Club of America at its annual meeting being held in Palm Beach Feb. 23-26. Dr. and Mrs. Howe expect to make several short trips through the state while in this vicinity. Guests at Barron Hall include Mr. W. W. Mr. Watson is the scientist who made the first telephone for Alexander Graham Bell and his was the first voice ever to be heard on a telephone. A number of years ago he went into the shipbuilding business, and started the Fore River Shipbuilding Company. Mr. Watson has written an autobiography under the title of "Exploring Light," which may be found in the library here. An informal tea was given on Monday at the home of Dr. Charles W. Dabney in honor of his cousins Dr. and Mrs. W. G. Harrison of Birmingham, Ala., who are here for several days before going to the East Coast. In the receiving line were Dr. Dabney, Dr, and Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. John Wilson, the latter 'being the daughter of the Harrisons. About fifty guests called during the afternoon. The color of the flame vine was carried out in the most attractive decorations. That was a very enjoyable little colloquy that ensued at the close of Dr. Richard Burton's recent lecture on twelve outstanding works of fiction of the year. Dr. Holt, exercising the right of questioning, inquired of Dr. Burton which he preferred,—-the recent writers or the great novelists of the past. The lecturer replied that it was hardly a fair question under the circumstances because he had been brought down to Rollins to teach the young people literature and if they thought he went back to the old writers for his favorite they might call him an old fogy. Nevertheless, he stated, he was willing to take chances and he declared Dickens to be his favorite writer of fiction. Now it just happens that Dr. Burton is being backed up in his selection by two rather impressive pieces of evidence. The recent publication by Doubleday, Doran of Stephen Leacock's latest work, "Charles Dickens, His Life and Work," contains the following appraisal of Dickens by the wellposted Canadian: "The highest reach of the world's imaginative literature,"—and Leacock is no more of an old fogy than Dr. Burton. The other exhibit in the case is the price that was paid by competing publishei's for the rights to Dickens', unpublished "Life of Christ" which has been liberated by the recent death of his son,— some $210,000. Dr. Burton has been an admirer and exponent of Dickens from his boyhood, regrets intensely the incident of his parents keeping him at home when the great author came to Hartford for a reading for fear that "Dickey" might be too much affected by Oliver Twist, has lectured over a hundred times on Dickens, is the author of "Dickens, How to Know Him," one of the most readable of books. "No other novelist has exerted so much influence over so long a time," said Dr. Burton, to his interviewer. A quotation from Dr, Burton's book on Dickens sums up his view: —"An examination into the matter of editions shows that this writer is not only holding his own, but gaining from year to year;—there is a steadier demand for his books than for those of any other story tellers except for the temporary vogue of some current writer who is in demand for a year or so and then rapidly falls into innocuous desuetude Dickens' chance to live and renew his effect upon mankind as the years pass by was never brighter than it is at the present time." Asked for his favorite Dickens novel, Dr. Burton replied: "David Copperfield, confessedly his masterpiece, published when the author was thirty-eight, the most autobiographic, crowded full with scenes and characters that are as familiar and as great favorites as any fiction that ever came from an English pen." There was another thrill in the violin playing of Alice Biscow Sager, who has been heard before in Winter Park with much pleasure. This strikingly attractive young woman was a charm to the eye as well as to the ear and as she was seen before she played it is only lair to mention it in that order. Pier playing of the first movement of the Beethoven Concerto, Op. 61, showed a well founded musicianship and a technical mastery that was impressive and most enoyable, In spite of the unfavorable atmospheric conditions her intonation was a delight and her cantilena passages sang. She successfully essayed the difficult cadenza interpolated by Kreisler, showing facility and surety in her double stopping. This young artist is the sole product of George Orner of the Jacksonville School of Music, a Florida girl whose talent should be a source of pride to the State, as it is a ti'ibute to her teacher. I must also praise the exquisite playing of the viola by Dante Bergonzi and of the oboe by Carl Bowen in the duet passages of the second of the Caucasian Sketches. The brass choir was notably effective in the first and the whole orchestra gave a brilliant account of itself in the stirring "Procession of the Sirdar." A large audience enjoyed the concert and expressed its pleasure enthusiastically. The next concert -will be Sunday, March 4th, with Mine. Sundelius as soloist. Follow him and he'll put you there and your church 'though it have but one member will be a holy place." MME. SUNDELIUS HEARD IN RECITAL A large audience attended the recital given by Mme. Marie Sundelius, former prima donna soprano of the Metropolitan Opera, at the Annie Russell Theatre on Monday evening. Mme. Sundelius was suffering from the effects of a recent illness which had obliged the postponement of her recital from last week, and she announced to the audience that she was singing under difficulties. Despite her handicap, however, Mme. Sundelius demonstrated the manner and experience of the artist that she is as was delightfully shown in her description of the Scandinavian ballad about the little boy who changed his cow for a violin. Her program contained many interesting novelties as well as old favorites. She will be heard again at the next concert of the Symphony Orchestra and her many friends in Winter Park hope that her indisposition will have passed and that they will have an opportunity to enjoy the plenitude of her well-known accomplishments as a soloist. However, the many kindnesses and good wishes of encouraging friends is making his task a pleasant one. The large number of subscriptions which came to his desk in advance have been a great joy and a challenge to his efforts to produce a paper that will fill a true need in Winter Park. From the standpoint of the editor the outlook has been one of pleasant anticipations and keen interest; from the standpoint of the publisher and business manager, the production and carrying on of any kind of publication in these times is something like sailing a boat in a calm. But there is a breeze of business encouragement starting up in the southern end of the State and who can say but that the anxieities of the publisher will ..-shortly turn into the joy of the editor? ^ We present our first issue following Emerson's advice never to apologize or explain.
