<p>Historical Note-Mary Elizabeth Brown was born in 1822 in Lockport, New York. It is possibl she first visited Florida 1833-1844, when her Episcopal minister/missionary father lived in the state.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>She met Mary McClure and they lived together in Chicago. Mary Brown became a teacher at Northwestern University. Her main area of interest was the humanities, especially literature and philosophy. She often attended lectures by various personalities.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>In 1875 they bought land and moved to a lakefront cabin ("No Man's Land") on Lake Sylvan as part of the "town" of Osceola. Here Mary Brown kept busy growing oranges and other plants for profit, washing, ironing, cleaning, and visiting friends in the area.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Possibly a lay missionary, Mary Brown, although Episcopalian, often attended several sermons Sundays. She gave paid lectures and in 1882 was on the local committee to invite preachers to visit (she represented the Episcopalians.) Also in 1882, she began the Sunday school that met at the newly established Town Hall.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>In 1885, Mary Brown was a member of the first library board. She donated her recipe book to the newborn collection.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>By 1888 Mary Brown built New Hope Cottage, which soon supported her Sunday school as well as sewing lessons and the literary club.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Mary Brown died in 1909. At 87, she was the oldest person in Winter Park at the time.</p>
<p> </p>

<p>Historical Note: Eulalie Osgood Grover was born on 6/22/1873 in Mantorville, Minnesota. When she was still young her father, Congregationalist minister Nahum Wesley Grover, moved the family back to New England, where she grew up.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>In 1891 she graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, where a fellow student prophesied she wtmld become a children's writer. After graduation she taught primary grades at.. Dow Academy in Franconia, New Hampshire for three years. She spent the next two years in Germany and France, studying French.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Upon returning to the United States she found little need for her French, but upon seeing Bertha</p>
<ol>
<li>Corbett's drawings, she felt compelled to write a children's reading primer, <em>The Sunbonnet Babies. </em>Clear and straightforward with a continuing story, <em>The Sunbonnet Babies </em>were soon joined by <em>The Overall Boys </em>and several more stories that advanced with grades. In 1911 Eulalie Osgood Grover returned to Europe to write the Babies and Boys' adventures in Holland, Italy, and Switzerland.</li>
</ol>
<p> </p>
<p>Eulalie Osgood Grover lived six years in a Chicago suburb before living twenty years in Oberlin, Ohio, with her brother Frederick, a professor of botany. In 1926 she moved with her brother Edwin to Winter Park. The family stayed nine months of the year in Winter Park, spending the summers in North Carolina.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>She collected rare children's books, gardened, studied children's folklore, and of course continued to write, eventually writing a biography of Robert Louis Stevenson. In 1953 she published a high-school level biography of Benjamin Franklin.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>On December 25, 1958, Eulalie Osgood Grover died of bronchitis at the age of 85. In lieu of flowers the family requested donations to the Hannibal Square Library, given her interest in it.</p>
<p> </p>

<p>Personal (1969-1986) and Senatorial Papers (1981-1986)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The main emphasis of the collection is her in the United States Senate. Included is correspondence from various political figures (state and national), records of her legislative activities and materials from her various senatorial campaigns. The majority of the materials was generated by Hawkins (from her conduct of official and public duties and business) and can provide the researcher with both a survey of Florida's political environment in the 1970's and 1980's, and a profile of Hawkins as a politician.</p>
<p>On a broader scale, the collection provides a look into the activities and issues that were of interest to the Florida Congressional Delegation during her terms in Congress (1980-1986). Issues include: the Cross-Florida Barge Canal, immigration, the citrus industry/agriculture, foreign trade, and illegal drugs. In summary the collection contains that when used in conjunction with other sources (papers of political and historically important figures) can provide a comprehensive picture of Florida's political climate during a period of political conservatism and re-emergence of the Republican Party in state politics.</p>

<p><u>Scope and content:</u></p>
<p>The collection covers her political career from 1969 to 1986. The bulk of the material comes from her Senate period (1980-1986). The materials include correspondence (business and civic leaders, politicians, Republican Party officials, etc.), materials: from her PSC and senatorial campaigns (printed materials, statements, press releases, etc.), Senate terms ( drafts of proposed legislation and issue/position statements, legislative voting data), her activities and involvement with the Republican Party in Florida, her campaigning for Jack Eckerd (gubernatorial campaign, 1978), press releases, position papers, speeches, memoranda, photographs and video tapes (interviews, speeches, public appearances, etc.).</p>

<p>Eula Pearl was born on August 19, 1918 in Reynolds, Georgia. She moved to Orlando, in 1937. She attended the Colored Business School in 1946 and 1947.</p>
<p> </p>
<br />
<p>In 1954, she graduated from Jones High School as valedictorian at the age of 38, married</p>
<p>W.C. Jenkins, and moved to Winter Park. The couple was involved in the Masons. Throughout her life she was a devoted churchgoer involved in children and youth ministries. Among her many church activities, she served as President of Church Women United. She also sang, studying voice, piano, and organ. She spent eight years in the Bach Festival Choir.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Eula Jenkins encouraged learning and was a longtime member of the Black Advisory Committee for Valencia. Her husband died in 1982. To promote education and honor her deceased mother by having a child graduate college (she was the last living of ten siblings) she enrolled at Valencia in 2000 at the age of 82. In April 2001 she received the first "Dare to Dream" award for this and her other acts supporting learning.</p>

<p>Scope and Content Note: Eula Pearl Jenkins moved to Winter Park in 1954. The collection contains CDs, articles, programs, photographs, certificates, diplomas, and awards.</p>

<p>One large scrapbook (l 8"X20") - Black cover with "Winter Park Florida Orten L. Gibson, President 1976-77" written on front. Contains newspaper clippings and photographs of the 1970's. Condition-very poor, mold and a lot of deterioration. Needs immediate attention if material is to be preserved.</p>

<p>One scrapbook (12"X14") Blue cover with Kiwanis International Logo on cover. Contains 1994 material, letters, photographs, award programs, etc. Couple of items dated 1992. Condition fair. Will need work to preserve.</p>
